PITTSFORD RECREATION DEPARTMENT
Director’s Report
October 12, 2004

It’s hard to believe it’s the middle of October already, where has all the time gone? Overall we have had wonderful weather this past month and finally this past weekend the leaves started to show some brilliant color. I personally believe that VT is a wonderful place to live. The Recreation Department has been busy running programs, building future work plans, and formulating a budget for FY 2006. Fall Programs the Recreation Department has or is currently offering include a VT Hunter Safety Course, Pittsford Youth Soccer, Lothrop Soccer and the Pittsford Pumpkin Party. The Pittsford Pumpkin Party is scheduled for Saturday, October 16 10:00 – 11:30 am at the Recreation Area. On slate for this year’s event will be Hay Rides, Arts & Crafts, Pumpkin & Face Painting, and Storyteller Michael Luzader will entertain the crowd with his witty charm. Also for the younger kids there will be a Pumpkin Hunt! People are advised to come dressed appropriate for the weather because it is fall in VT after all and you never know what mother nature will have in store for us. School Break Fun Days are scheduled for October 20 & 21 while children will be off from school due to Teacher In-service Day & Teacher’s Convention. On Wednesday, Oct. 20, we are planning a day long field trip to the Green Mountain Rock Climbing Center in Rutland. Participants will spend half the day at the indoor rock climbing gym scaling the walls and the other half will be spent pedaling a mountain bike down the trail. On Thursday, October 21, we are headed for the Rutland Bowlerama for a fun filled trip of bowling & pizza. Both of these events include transportation to and from Pittsford. Our first Teen Night of the school year, the very popular Halloween Dance, is scheduled for Friday, October 29, 7-10 pm at the VT Police Academy. Participants are encouraged to come in costume to win prizes. Chaperones are still needed for this event, if you are interested in helping out please let me know.

Recently I received the informational packet from Killington in reference to the Killington Jr. Program. I’m in the process now of getting that information out to the residents of Pittsford. Deadline to register for this program is Friday, November 5. The actual program will begin Sunday, January 2, 1:30 – 3:30 pm. One significant change in the program is that the actual lessons will take place at Pico rather than Killington. I don’t think this change will have a negative impact on our enrollment numbers, matter of fact it may even increase participation numbers because Pico is closer, smaller, and a much more skier friendly mountain than Killington. This is a Killington Ltd. change, not something I or the Recreation Department did. It will be interesting to see how everything plays out; I’ll follow up on this topic again next month.

The Monday morning Adult Yoga program hasn’t started off like it did last fall. There was minimum interest in the September program and even less in the October session. I’ve got to speak to Tammy Brown, our instructor, again but it looks like we will put this program on hold for a few months. Perhaps we’ll try to revitalize the program after the holidays, maybe at a different time to try to make it more appealing to a larger number of residents. But as we lose one adult program (for now) we are beginning another. The Aerobics/Kickboxing program is set to begin on Tuesday, October 19, 5:30 – 6:30 at the Lothrop Gym. As you may or may not remember this program typically begins in January, but after the success we had last year and talking with the instructor and a few of the women who participated in the past I decided to start it earlier this year. Based on the phone calls that I’ve already gotten from “new participants” since putting out the information a week or so ago I’m confident that the program will do okay.

The Recreation Department is again sponsoring Men’s Open Basketball, at the Lothrop Gym, on Sunday evenings 6:00 – 9:00 pm. This program started on October 10 and usually runs until May (based on interest). This program is geared towards men who are looking to get off the couch and a little exercise; therefore play isn’t too physical or extreme.

On Wednesday, September 15, I presented the Recreation Department’s Work Plan for the remaining of the current fiscal year to the Selectboard. I’m happy to report that the presentation went great and was approved by the Selectmen. Presenting the Work Plan gave me the opportunity to spell out exactly what the Recreation Department does on the day-to-day basis. Judging from the feedback I got from the Board of Selectmen I enlighten them on many programs that the Recreation Department offers throughout the year and even though writing the plan itself was a long and tedious process I’m glad I was given the chance to go before the board and show them exactly what we do. Very soon I’ll be starting to write the Work Plan for FY 2006, which is due October 29.
