PITTSFORD
RECREATION DEPARTMENT Summer has finally arrived and we are in full gear. The Recreation Department is busy with Swim Lessons, Summer Day Camp, and Youth Baseball & Softball programs. The Pittsford Youth League Baseball/Softball program sponsored 13 teams this spring and summer with almost 200 kids participating. I would like to thank all 11 local businesses that sponsored a team this spring/summer. Without their continued support the Pittsford Youth League would not be able to offer such a high quality program for youth ages 5 to 18 years old. Pittsford Day Camp has begun another summer of fun in the sun. Jade Keith, now in her 4th summer as the Camp Director, has done a great job building this program into something that kids look forward to each summer. Assisting Ms. Keith as Camp Counselors are Emily Drummond, who is returning for her third summer with the program. Ms. Drummond has worked her way up from volunteering as a Jr. Counselor her first year to an integral part of the staff this summer. Our third staff member, Emma Clerihew, has a lot experience working with young children such as teaching catechism, choreographing theater groups, and directing different activities at Maclure Library. Ms. Clerihew will certainly have a positive impact on the entire Day Camp experience. Also helping we have six individuals ages 13-14 helping out as Jr. Councilors. Julie Ketcham, Codi Hesse, Dustin Lajoie, Billy Gillespie, Craig Drummond, and Marc Vitaglianio are taking turns assisting everyday that camp is in session. Mr. Drummond and Mr. Vitaglianio are returning for their second year as Jr. Counselors and will be working as mentors for the other JC’s. I can not count how many positive comments I have gotten from residents who have told me how good the Recreation Area looks. Joe Pomykala continues to do a splendid job keeping the Recreation Area in beautiful shape. I recently gave Mr. Balch, Pittsford Town Manager, a tour of our facilities and he was very impressed with the way things looked. He commented that it was evident that who ever was taking care of the Recreation Area took pride in the work that they did because the place looked so great. I am happy to report that the Swim Area and particularly the Swim Lessons have been going great. Ashley Becker our American Red Cross Swim Instructor/Swim Area Supervisor is doing a great job. Not since my first year have I had such a competent person in this position. Ms. Becker is an outgoing, intelligent employee, who has been able to build a strong relationship between her and the parents of the children who are in her classes. Parents have been especially satisfied with the way she gets in water everyday to teach lessons. Not only has Ms. Becker been able to build strong ties with the parents but also has gained the trust of the other lifeguards and has everyone working together as a team. The Recreation Department is fortunate to have such a cohesive group of lifeguards working our swim area. It hard to believe but the first session of swim lessons will be over at the end of this week. Ashley Becker, our American Red Cross swim instructor told me that she has enjoyed working with the children and is looking forward to the next session. There are 42 children registered in the first session. Lessons begin at 10:30am and end by 5:00pm, Monday – Friday for 3 weeks. The second session of Swim Lessons will begin Monday, July, 19th and end on Friday, August 6th. On Sunday, June 27, 2004 the Maclure Library and Recreation Department co-sponsored our annual Ice Cream Social at the Recreation Area. Approximately 75 people joined us for a wonderful evening of live music and ice cream. Children of all ages really seemed to enjoy the new playground equipment. The entire evening kids were playing on the structure, and parents had no problems keeping an eye on them from pavilion. |
