PITTSFORD
RECREATION DEPARTMENT
Meeting
was called to order by Rob Ketcham 7:09pm. Members of the Recreation Committee
who were present include Scott Kirby, Eric Stage, and Kathy Shortsleeves.
Recreation
Director Randy Adams was also present. Recreation
Committee members Kelly Carter and Mark Poljacik were not present. ADMINISTRATIVE DUTIES The
minutes of April 6, 2004 were read and accepted. Scott Kirby made the motion
to accept the minutes as read. Eric
Stage seconded the motion. The motion passed unanimously. RECREATION DIRECTOR’S REPORT The
Recreation Committee read the Recreation Director’s Report. Mr. Adams added
that he was happy that he now had an E-mail address at work, Rsadams@sover.net,
and he asked each Committee member for their E-mail addresses. Mr. Adams
stated that he now would be send minutes of each meeting via E-mail. OLD BUSINESS Recreation Area Future Plan Members
of the committee discussed the need for future planning at the Recreation
Area. It is their believe that a “Future Plan” would benefit the growth
and expansion of the Recreation Area. The Recreation Committee made it clear
that they want to be informed before any major project is started that will
change the physical, environmental, or ecological features of the Recreation
Area. The Committee stated that they are not for or against any expansion or
improvement ideas, it is just that they feel it is important that the proper
steps should be taken before any work is started. Mr. Adams pointed out that
most of the larger projects that have been done recently are usually too
expensive for the Recreation Department to fund by itself. He said that his
department relies heavily on outside grants and donations, the help of many
local volunteers, and support from other Town Departments. Mr. Adams said it
has been a nice of combination of support that has allowed projects to be
accomplished. He thinks that this trend should continue when other projects
are looked at. Playground Recap Mr.
Adams wanted to be sure that he thanked Rob Ketcham for taking the lead on
getting the playground equipment into the ground. Mr. Adams said he felt the
actual instillation of the equipment went rather smoothly, Mr. Ketcham had the
entire process planned out and everything went together without a problem. One
item, the support rail for the “sky wheels” was found to be damaged when
it was unpacked. Mr. Adams has contacted his agent with Game Time Equipment
and a new rail is being shipped to the Recreation Department and will be here
in a couple of weeks. When it arrives it will be t into place and the
playground will be complete. As of now the playground is operational and
children seem to be enjoying the new equipment. Mr. Adams also thanked the
many individuals who volunteered their time and services to help install the
playground equipment. There were over 25 people throughout the day stopped by
to lend a hand. Mr. Adams reported that he was working on a thank you for
those individuals. Mr. Adams also stated that he would be setting up a formal
celebration to mark the opening of the playground equipment. Mr.
Adams informed the Recreation Committee that there was roughly $1000.00 left
to spend in donations set aside for playground equipment. He told the
Committee that some that money would be spent on a “thank you” sign that
will thank all businesses, organizations, and individuals who helped make this
project a huge success. He also noted that the remaining amount would have to
be spent by the end of the fiscal year (June 30, 2004) or the money would be
lost. The Recreation Committee suggested that Mr. Adams look into adding a
couple smaller pieces of equipment that would be located in the swim area and
would be age appropriate for younger children. NEW BUSINESS Swim
Area Supervisor Mr.
Adams reported that he has not yet been able to hire a Swim Area Supervisor
for the summer. He informed the Committee that he has looking since March to
fill the position. He also mentioned that this is a very important piece of
the Recreation Department’s summer swim program because it is the person who
is qualified to teach swim lessons. Danielle Hendee who was the Swim Area
Supervisor last season declined to return this season based on the travel time
it takes her to drive to Pittsford from Castleton each day, and that she found
other employment closer, at a better pay rate to her home. Mr. Adams stated
that besides having it posted in the Town Marquees since March, and having the
ad listed on the Red Cross web site since April 1st, that he has
put ads in the Brandon/Pittsford Reporter and the Rutland Herald. Mr. Adams
commented that he was starting to get nervous because the 1-week column
“help wanted” ad, which ran April 22nd-28th,
generated 0 telephone calls. The Recreation Committee suggested that possibly
taking out a block ad, on any of the stronger circulation days, would create
some interest because perhaps it would be easier to see and more people would
be reading the paper. Mr. Stage said that he would contact the career
coordinator at Castleton State College to see if she had any suggestions. With
no further business to discuss, Scott Kirby made the motion to adjourn the
meeting. Kathy
Shortsleeves seconded the motion. The motion passed unanimously. The
meeting adjourned at 8:20pm. Respectfully
submitted, Randy Adams, Recording Secretary Rob
Ketcham, Chairman
