PITTSFORD
RECREATION DEPARTMENT MINUTES OF MARCH 10, 2004 MUNICIPAL
OFFICES @ 7:00pm Meeting
was called to order by Rob Ketcham at 7:10pm. Members of the Recreation
Committee who were present include Mark Poljacik, Scott Kirby, and Eric Stage. Recreation
Director Randy Adams was also present. Recreation
Committee member Kathy Shortsleeves arrived at 7:14pm. Recreation
Committee member Kelly Carter was not present. ADMINISTRATIVE DUTIES The
minutes of February 10, 2004 were read and accepted. Eric Stage made the
motion to accept the minutes as read. Mark
Poljacik seconded the motion. The motion passed unanimously. RECREATION DIRECTOR’S REPORT The Recreation Committee read the Recreation
Director’s report. Mr. Adams followed up his written report talking about
the “Change your Weighs” program that the Recreation Department is
sponsoring, starting in April. Mr. Adams explained that it is an educational
program for people who are overweight and are looking for techniques to lose
weight by eating more sensibly. The “Change your Weighs” program will
teach participants how choose healthily foods, read and understand
product/food labels, and plan meals that are low in fat. Participants will
keep a food diary, set personal goals, and learn how to manage their own food
cravings to help them lose weight. HEALTHWISE at Rutland Regional, the same
group who operates the “Safe Sitter” program that Recreation Department
has offered the past two winters, will facilitate this program, which is going
to be held in the Lothrop Cafeteria. Mr. Adams noted that the program is
already very close to being full with 20 out of a possible 25 participants
registered. Mr.
Adams informed the Committee that the Adult Yoga program that has been running
on Monday mornings at the Maclure Library is now in its seventh straight
month. He said that it has been basically the same 5 or 6 people who are
attending each and every week, but there has been a few new participants who
have joined the class now and then. Mr. Adams said he thought with spring
right around the corner he wasn’t sure how much longer the program would
continue, however he did say that he was planning on offering the program
again next fall. OLD BUSINESS Lifeguard Job Description At the February Recreation Committee meeting members
were given a copy of the present job description for the lifeguards and were
asked to read over it and come to the March meeting with suggestions to
improve it. Recreation Committee members gave their input on the topic. Mr.
Adams said that he would include their suggestions in draft copy of the
updated lifeguard job description that he will mail to each member along with
the draft minutes of the meeting. Mr.
Adams informed the Recreation Committee that he had meant with Kelley Turner.
Based on her years as a lifeguard for the State of VT and a mother of two
children, who swim at the Recreation Area often, Mrs. Turner wanted to help
the Recreation Department revise the lifeguard job description. Mrs. Turner
brought up many interesting ideas that could be added in either the revised
job description or the “new” swim area rules. Swim Area Rules Mr. Adams gave each member the Recreation Committee a
copy of a list of “proposed” Rules for the Swim Area that he drafted. Mr.
Adams stated that having a posted list of rules at the Swim Area would benefit
both the lifeguards and patrons using the Swim Area. Patrons will now know
what type of behavior is expected of them and their children, meanwhile the
lifeguards will have a clear idea of the exact rules that they are to enforce. 2004
Recreation Area Fees After a brief discussion Scott Kirby made the motion to
recommend to the Selectboard that the fees at the Recreation Area be the same
as they were in 2003 with one additional fee, in which a $1 fee be charged for
a day tennis pass. Kathy Shortsleeves seconded the motion. The motion was
passed unanimously. Playground
Equipment Mr. Adams wanted to make sure Recreation Committee
members were still thinking about the “new” playground equipment. He
emphasized that a final location needs to be selected so that the equipment
can be put together. A Committee member suggested that the next meeting be
held at the Recreation Area so that they could get a fresh idea of the lay
out. All who were present agreed to meet at the Recreation Area for the next
scheduled Committee meeting. The next Recreation Committee meeting will be at
the Pittsford Recreation Area, Tuesday, April 6, 2004 @ 6:00pm to finalize the
location of the playground equipment so that construction may begin. Mr. Adams
made it clear that he wants the “new” playground equipment operational by
the time children get out of school for the summer. NEWS BUSINESS Recreation
Committee Vacancy Mr. Adams reported that long time committee member Mary-Lou Brod did not renew her term as a member of the Recreation Committee. The Selectboard, who recently had their restructuring meeting for the year, has already posted the opening. Interested parties are asked to send a letter of interest, to the Selectboard, if they would like to serve on the committee. Mr. Adams said he has made a couple people aware, who at one or another had asked him to inform them when a vacancy occurred. With no further business to discuss, Eric Stage made the
motion to adjourn the meeting. Kathy Shortsleeves seconded the motion. The motion
passed unanimously. The meeting adjourned at 8:40pm. Respectfully Submitted, Randy Adams, Recording Secretary
Rob Ketcham, Chairman NEXT MEETING: TUESDAY, APRIL 6, 2004 @ PITTSFORD RECREATION AREA; 6:00pm
