Recreation Director's Report
October 9, 2008

The last month the weather has been most favorable for the Recreation Department's programs. This is a great time of year to get outdoors and enjoy it with our families. Our Saturday morning Youth Soccer program had a wonder fall. For the first time in recent memory we were able to get all 5 Saturdays, 9/6-10/4, in without a single rainout. After the record rain fall we experienced this summer I was concerned how well the lower soccer field would hold up if the rain continued in the same manner. Well thankfully the weather has cooperated and the field is in wonderful condition right now.

On Wednesday, September 24 Lakes Region Radio (WNYV 94.1) was back in Pittsford doing another segment of their 'On the Road" weekly show. I was asked, and I accepted, if I'd like to do another "LIVE" interview to discuss the Recreation Department, the Recreation Area and promote the various programs that we have offer. Realizing that most of the families who participate in our programs are people who are extremely busy, so I like to spread our message across as many media outlets as I can. Along the same line I'd like to thank the Town Manger's office for consistently publishing the "Pittsford Newsletter." Based on the number of comments I've received I feel Pittsford residents are noticing the programs that Recreation Department advertises in the Town of Pittsford Newsletter. As I've said before it's super that the newsletter is consistently being published (by the Town Manager's office) 3 to 4 times a year and is being mailed to every Pittsford residence. So obviously I'm putting in as much information as I can into each issue.

On Thursday, September 25 (the 4th Thursday of each month), "Pittsford Seniors" sponsored their monthly luncheon at the VT Police Academy. 45 people pre-registered for the September meal. Each luncheon features a keynote speaker or entertainer. Pittsford Seniors' own Umbert Rosato played his accordion. Folks enjoyed listening to his music. The monthly luncheons are meant to give local seniors a nutritious meal at an affordable price ($4.50 donation for people 60 and older & $6.00 for everyone else) but also so they can get out of their daily routine and see neighbors and friends. The next monthly luncheon is scheduled for Thursday, October 23 at 1:00 pm. The keynote speakers are two Pittsford residents who are running for the same State Representative seat in November. Incumbent Peg Flory (R) & challenger Ellen Garneau (P) will be present to discuss why they believe they should be elected.

The annual Pittsford Pumpkin Party is scheduled for Saturday, October 18 at the Recreation Area 10-11:30 am. This event is co-sponsored by the Maclure Library. Wagon Rides, fresh popped popcorn, and of course, decorating pumpkins are highlights for the event. Magician Blaine Goad and his assistant from Hocus Pocus Magic Show are scheduled to entertain our participants.

On Friday, October 24 (7-10pm) the Pittsford & Brandon Recreation Departments will host our annual Halloween Teen Dance at the Vermont Police Academy. Teens that live in the R.N.E.S.U. are welcome to be part of the fun. Parents/Legal Guardians are required to complete permission forms and they MUST come in side the gym to sign in & out their kid. Once a teen arrives they cannot leave the without an adult.

In August I reported that the Recreation Department was working with two Boy Scouts who are working towards their Eagle Scout Badges. Ethan Nordimeyer is one of these scouts, and he has scheduled a work day at the Recreation Area on Saturday, October 18. He is planning to put together the benches, prepare the ground at the site locations that need it. By days end he hopes to install each of 11-13 benches that were paid for by sponsors
