Recreation Director's Report Its September again already can you believe it? Lifeguards and the Day Camp Staff are back at school and our summer activities are only a memory. Even though the swim area has been closed the Recreation Area has remained buzzing with activity. The 5/6 soccer teams and LEAP (Lothrop's After School Program) are a couple groups that have been at the Recreation Area regularly. Several parties are scheduled in the pavilion throughout the month of September. Caverly EEE Preschool will be hosting an outdoor "Family Fun in Nature" activity for kids 6 & under at the Recreation Area. I've been told they plan to offer nature treasure hikes along the trails so kids can collect certain "nature items" to make their own bug habitats. They've also planned an activity where kids will collect things near and in the Sugar Hollow Brook. On Thursday, August 28, 2008 the Recreation Department & the Pittsford Seniors hosted our monthly luncheon at the Vermont Police Academy. 42 seniors from the local community attended the luncheon. August marked the 1 year anniversary of this popular program. The monthly turnout averages 43-44 folks. It's definitely the great food and wonderful service that makes this a must eat event. Each meal is made from scratch by the Chef Bob and his helpers, the same crew who prepare & cook the meals for the Academy. The Town of Pittsford is privileged to have them as neighbors. This fall the Recreation Department is offering our annual Hunter Safety Course. For the 4th year in row this program is taking place at the Vermont Police Academy rather than in the Conference Room at the Town Offices. The Academy's classrooms are much more spacious which allows our participants to learn in a much more comfortable environment. Pittsford resident Mr. Rick Hedding is the instructor for this class. He enjoys teaching his students knowledge & skills that most of them will retain and use for the rest of their lives. This is the 4th year in a row he has taught this program for the Recreation Department. Mr. Hedding is a State of VT Deputy Game Warden. The Youth Soccer Program kicked off another Saturday morning season on Saturday, September 6. Over 92 children 4 years old - 4th grade are participating in this 5 week program. Participants numbers are close to our normal trend (98/2007, 93/2006, & 90/2005). Mr. Dick Williams, Otter Valley Girls Varsity Soccer Coach, and some of his players are assisting me again with the actual on-field instruction of the 4 & 5 year olds and the 1st& 2nd graders. This is the 7th straight season the OV girls varsity soccer team has been associated with this program. In October along with the Brandon Recreation Department we'll be co-sponsoring a FREE skating event at the Rutland Regional Field House for our residents to take advantage of. During this scheduled skate event our participants will be the only skaters on the ice. For this particular time transportation will NOT be provided. However if things go well perhaps in future we could make transportation available. Other programs the Recreation Department is sponsoring this fall are the Pittsford Pumpkin Party, a Halloween Teen Dance, Men's & Women's Open Basketball, and Cardio-Kickboxing/Aerobics. I'm also starting to coordinate a Snowmobile Safety Class, the Annual Holiday Craft Fair in November, and the Caroling on the Green event in early December. |
