Recreation Director's Report

July 15, 2008

The last time I wrote back in April I was getting baseball/softball teams ready to begin, how time has just flown by ever since. The Recreation Department has been busy getting the Recreation Area open while planning & running many programs for people to take part of.

I found out in March that Abbie Becker would not be returning as the Swim Area Supervisor this summer. Immediately I e-mailed the lifeguard staff to notify them that the Recreation Department was looking for a new swim supervisor. Almost instantly I had three responses who indicated that they would like to apply for the upper position. The interview process went great and each individual presented themselves well. Each one could have handled the position, however in the end Ms. Kayla Gallipo was promoted as the new Swim Area Supervisor. She is our most experienced guard who truly enjoys her job and the families who use the Recreation Area regularly know her.

Besides a few rainy days swim lessons have been going well. For the first time since 2002 the Recreation Department has been able to secure two WSI's (Water Safety Instructors). Ali Flewelling along with Kayla, are in charge of teaching our participants how to swim. I think its important to mention that both these guards became certified this past winter while they were away at college and taking full course loads. The first session June 23 - July 3 of three swim classes has come and gone. A total of 21 children registered to participate. The second session July 14 - 25 has just begun with 33 children participating. The third and final session is scheduled for August 4 - 15. Traditionally, the Recreation Department had just offered two sessions that concluded the first or second week of August which meant that there was no scheduled programming to pull swimmers to the Swim Area the final few weeks it was open. However, this is the third summer the Recreation Department has offered three sessions of lessons. I've been really satisfied with the results that the "new" scheduling has produced. The swim area sees much more weekday activity for a longer duration of the season.

Up to today 58 Swim Area Season Passes have been sold. This number is down slightly from last year (65) but June was a very wet month. However on the up swing is the total number of Tennis Passes which is up to 18 for the season.

On Saturday, June 28, the fourth annual Pittsford Day Celebration took place at the Recreation Area. Citizens from the local community and beyond joined us for a day of family fun & excitement. This year's event was held a few days earlier than normal to allow us to call our event the "Kick Off to Summer" and so we wouldn't have to compete with other 4th of July events going on throughout the county. Highlights included live music, childrens games, and of course our famous pie eating contests. The Pittsford Day Committee was pleased that this year we were able to secure new organizations such as Omya, Inc., Markowski's Excavating, Pittsford Seniors, the Sugar Hollow Sno-Mads, and CVPS brought their Hybrid Line Truck. The Pittsford Historical Society and Boy Scouts were also present. A good time was had by all and even though the celebration was cut short by 2 hours due to rain. Vendors and participants alike were pleased with the day's activities.

The 2008 Day Camp "Summer Down Under" is already in its 3rd of 6 weeks of operation. As I reported in April, Kendra Spotts was hired as the new Day Camp Director. Ms. Spotts, a Jr. at Gordon College just returned from studying abroad in Australia for a semester. Her name might sound familiar because Kendra also did a 13 week internship with the Recreation Department last summer. Kendra has molded the entire camp theme around her experiences.

On June 1st from 6-8 pm the Recreation Department and the Maclure Library co-sponsored our annual Ice Cream Social at the Recreation Area. I'm very pleased to announce that +180 people attended this year's event. Over the past couple of years this particular program has grown into something residents really look forward to and come out to support: in 2006 (85) and in 2007 (115). Steve Spensley and band have provided an excellent sound that folks are certainly drawn to. Families enjoy coming out because it's a free event where they can load their kids up with sugar and let them burn off some extra calories.
