Recreation Director's Report April 8, 2008 Happy spring to everyone! The weather lately certainly has been a nice reprieve from the nasty winter conditions we encountered this winter. Over the past several weeks the Recreation Department has been extremely busy planning future activities, coordinating the youth baseball/softball programs, & running a learn to ski and snowboard program. Youth League Registration took place during the entire month of March. Parents who wanted to sign up their child to play T-Ball, Mighty Mites, Minor League Softball, Minor & Major Baseball (Little League) had to fill out a form, pay $25 fee per child, and return the form to the Recreation Department by March 28. I'm pleased to report that 126 boys and girls between the ages of 5 - 12 are registered to play. So far, the 2008 numbers are slightly above average for the past three years 125-2007, 118-2006, & 123-2005, (avg. 122). For the second straight season the Recreation Department is offering a new division of baseball for just 9-10 year olds. Minor League Baseball is an intermediate level in between Little League and Mighty Mites. After just one season the Recreation Department can see a vast improvements in our over all baseball/softball program. Since the age requirements have been cut down to 2 year age brackets, rather than 3 years, in each division kids are now playing with and against other kids much closer to their own age. This has taken away the intimidation factor for a lot of the younger kids who might felt overwhelmed playing against someone 3 years older than they are. We hope this will help keep kids interested in playing. In mid-March Emily Drummond informed me that she will not be returning as our summer camp director. She has decided that she would like to focus on her profession as a nurse. Ms. Drummond has been part of camp since the Recreation Department began offering it in the summer of 2001 She began her career with us as a volunteer and worked her all the way up to director. She certainly has had a huge positive impact on the quality of this popular program. Ms Drummond is partially responsible for building camp into the Recreation Department's mostly anticipated program each summer. It'll be difficult to replace her devoted work ethic and her pleasant charm she had with the campers. The Recreation Department will miss her however we do wish her the best of luck. Since there isn't anyone currently on the day camp staff who is really experienced enough to fill this void I immediately began to brainstorm other ideas. I'm excited to announce that I've hired Kendra Spotts as our new Director. Ms. Spotts is not new to the Recreation Department, you might recall she did a 13 week "internship" with the Recreation Department last summer.
