Recreation Director's Report
October 8, 2007

October is still a great time of year to be outdoors, this year has been especially mild. Our Saturday morning Youth Soccer program was fortunate that the 5 weeks we ran the program we were able to enjoy t-shirt weather. We lost one morning due hard rain, but even that day turned out to be fairly mild. Our Youth Soccer program for the 4 & 5 year olds and 1st/2nd graders ended on October 6. Most of the players really worked hard to improve their soccer skills during the program. The program ended with a small awards ceremony and everyone who participated received a "Certification of Competition". Players enjoyed donut holes, apples & milk. At the end of the party even a couple children stopped to say thank you, which I thought was rewarding. The older soccer kids, 3rd-6th graders still have at least couple more weeks to go before their seasons are finished. I said it before and I'll say it again, the Recreation Department relies heavily on the support of volunteers who make this Saturday morning program possible. Typically, we like to split the players up into smaller, more manageable group sizes, to ensure maximum learning. I'd like to thank Mr. Dick Williams (OV Girls Varsity Soccer coach) and his two children Brian & Savannah who were present each and every week to assist me. Kelsey Knapp and Steven Kallen also volunteered a few of their Saturday mornings to help us out also.

On Thursday, September 27 (the 4th Thursday of the month), "Pittsford Seniors" sponsored their second monthly luncheon at the VT Police Academy. Over 50 people pre-registered and took advantage of the program. Each luncheon features a keynote speaker. President Peg Armitage of the Pittsford Historical Society was September's speaker. Folks enjoyed listening to her stories of times that many of them remembered fondly. These luncheons are meant to give local seniors a nutritious meal at an affordable price ($4.00 for people 60 and older & $4.50 for everyone else) so they can get out socialize with neighbors and friends. The next monthly luncheon is scheduled for Thursday, October 25 @ 1:00 pm. Keynote speaker is yet to be announced.

A fall session of Kripalu Yoga began in mid-September. This particular offering is taking place on Tuesdays morning at the Maclure Library. During the first 3 out 5 gatherings the class has averaged six (6) participants. The reason for this yoga program is being offered in the morning is simple, it was the only time our instructor was available. At first glance, the six participants might not sound like a lot of interest but in reality, it's a good beginning to being a self-sustaining program. I have found out that by offing programs at this particular time we are targeting a very different population in town. For these participates the usual afternoon and evening times the Recreation Department offers programs just don't fit into their personal schedules for one reason or another. Another morning session of Kripalu Yoga is scheduled to begin in late October and last until the end of November. We have had already 3 people pre-register for this program.

I hope that you noticed that the Recreation Department had a nice variety of programs advertised in the Town of Pittsford Newsletter that went out to residents recently. It's great that finally the newsletter is consistently being published (by Town Manager's office) 3 to 4 times a year and is being mailed to every Pittsford residence. This is great news for the Recreation Department, as I typically like to place as much information into an issue as I can.
