Recreation Director's Report
April 10, 2007

The calendar says it is supposed to be spring and certainly day light is extending later and longer each day but judging from the snow on the ground and according to the weather forecast for later this week it appears that the snow will be hanging around for at least another week or so. If it lasts any longer than that it will begin to effect baseball/softball practices that are set to start the week of 4/23.

Youth League Registration took place during the entire month of March. Parents who wanted to sign up their child to play T-Ball, Mighty Mites, Minor League Softball, Minor & Major Baseball (Little League) had to fill out a form, pay $25 fee per child, and return the form by March 30. I'm delighted to report that 125 boys and girls between the ages of 5 - 12 are registered to play. So far, the 2007 numbers are a little above average for the past three years 118-2006, 123-2005, and 119-2004 (avg. 121). The Recreation Department is offering a new division of baseball for just 9-10 year olds. Minor Baseball is an intermediate level in between Little League and Mighty Mites.

Another program that I have spent a fair amount of time working on during the past month is Summer Day Camp. I have been working with new Camp Director, Emily Drummond. Both she and I have been brainstorming different ideas. My main priority is the logistical piece of the program. I make sure the camp runs smoothly, I reserve the Lothrop School cafeteria & gym, and coordinate timing with outside groups, like the Maclure Library, who we often co-sponsor different activities with. As Camp Director, Ms. Drummond is planning weekly themes, daily plans, etc... Together we'll decide on appropriate field trips, as well as interview individuals to fill the counselor position she left behind when she was promoted. I have already received a hand full of calls inquiring about camp. Most of the calls have been from out of town folks who wish to get their child into our day camp program. I will be talking to the Recreation Committee at the 4/11 meeting to get their opinion as to how to handle, in a fair way, this particular issue. Each year I'm getting more and more inquires from non-residents so I need to have a set policy in place to go by.

Over the past month, I've been slowly recruiting lifeguards for the 2007 summer season. As I mentioned in March I need to hire between 6-8 new guards to fill the large void of loosing some experienced help from 2006. I've already started my search locally around town by using the Town marquise and advertising in the Brandon/Pittsford Reporter. So far I've had some very promising leads. I've already hired one person with the requirement that they pass the Red Cross life guarding certification class. I’ll begin to expand my search over the next week or so, I'd like to advertise in the Rutland Herald once before colleges finish for the summer. The swim season begins in only seven weeks from now so we can't wait too much longer.

The second session of Kripalu Yoga just finished up yesterday. Participation numbers were outstanding during this particular session. Over 50 participants joined the weekly program that met on Monday evenings 7:00-8:00 pm at the Lothrop Gym. Petra O'Neill, our instructor told me more than once what a wonderful group she was working with and it was her pleasure to be teaching this program. At this time of year when it stays lighter later the Lothrop Gym can be a very enjoyable place to host this type of program. The large west facing windows allow the right amount of natural lighting in to give the space a real "glow" to it. Due to the popularity of the January and March programs the Recreation Department will be offering a third yoga session that will run for five weeks on Mondays, 4/23-5/21. Over the past few springs it has been this particular session that was most popular so I’m anxious to see what kind of participation numbers we get.

The Town of Pittsford has put together a town wide newsletter that will be mailed out to Pittsford residents in the next few days. In that publication you will see a number of programs the Recreation Department will be offering over the course of the spring and summer. The Recreation Department has been busy setting up these programs to accommodate various age groups. Please take minute and notice the variety of programs the Recreation Department will be offering, I think you'll agree that we have a nice mixture of activities happening right now.
