Recreation Director’s Report Wow what fantastic weather we’ve been experiencing the last several days, bright sunny days, moderate temperatures, with cool frosty nights, this in my opinion is the best time of year to live in VT. A nice autumn day can add a little extra bounce to anyone’s step. I just hope that we don’t get another rain filled October like we had last year, rainy Octobers can be hard for people. Due to circumstances beyond the Recreation Department’s control the date for the 2006 Pittsford Pumpkin Party has been pushed back by a week. Now the Pumpkin Party will take place Saturday, October 21, 10-11:30 am at the Recreation Area. As I said last month the Recreation Department is seeking volunteers to help out on the day of the event with the actual activities themselves, please let the Recreation Director know what you can do to assist. (Thanks!) For the first time the Recreation Department will be using it’s own tractor this year to pull the hay wagon around, it’ll be a good way for the Recreation Department to display our new piece of equipment for the residents of Pittsford. The six week Youth Soccer program for Pre K-2nd graders was scheduled to end on Saturday, October 7, but since one of the Saturday morning sessions was cancelled due to rain and cold temperatures I decided to extend soccer another week to make up for the week we lost. I did still have the end-of-season parties as originally scheduled on October 7 instead of doing it on the last day of the program like I normally do in case that last session is cancelled for any reason. I handed out participation certificates to each child, while everyone enjoyed apples, donuts holes, and cider. If the weather is unpleasant and the extra session has to be cancelled, there will be no other make up date. Thanks to Matt Levandowski and the Heritage Family Credit Union, the Recreation Department has recently taken delivery of a brand new portable homerun fence. Our new fence is a 4’ high royal blue mesh fence, with the Heritage Family Credit Union insignia printed on it in white. This new fence is a wonderful addition to the Youth League (Little League) baseball field. Now our field will have the same dimensions as do most other fields in the league. This new fence will give Pittsford players a new sense of pride, especially when they start hitting them out of the park. Even though the fence’s main function will be a homerun fence on Memorial Field it’s designed to be used in many different situations. For example, right now a section of the fence is set up parallel with the sidelines on the upper soccer field at the Recreation Area to collect soccer balls before they go over the bank. This type of fence is ideal because in the past there have been some pessimistic feelings towards building a permanent homerun fence on Memorial Field. Some people thought it might take away from the natural beauty of the Recreation Area. This type of fence will help minimize a lot of these worries because it can be put up right before the baseball season begins and taken down soon after the season ends. I think it’s a wonderful compromise for both points of view, the baseball folks get the fence they been asking for, while people who were worried about the overall appearance of the Recreation Area don’t have to look at a fence all year round. A most sincere thank you goes out to the Heritage Family Credit Union and Matt Levandowski who really made opportunity happen for us.
