Recreation Director’s Report

April 11, 2006

This past month the Recreation Department has been rather busy running cleaning up after the winter programs and kicking off spring programs. I’ve also continued to prepare for summer by contacting lifeguards, planning for Day Camp and other summer programs, and have already begun opening the Recreation Area for the season.

Youth League Registration took place during the entire month of March. Parents who wanted to signup their child to play T-Ball, Mighty Mites, Minor League Softball, Major League Baseball (Little League) had to fill out a form, pay $25 fee per child, and return the form by March 31. I’m delighted to report that 118 boys and girls between the ages of 5 – 12 registered to play. So far the 2006 numbers are close to average over the past three years 123-2005, 119-2004, and 120 in 2003 (avg. 121). It will be interesting to watch the older levels, especially in softball to see where their numbers fall this summer. The Recreation Department might (or might not) get enough registrations to support a team in all 3 age divisions (Minors, Majors, & Seniors) over the course of the same season, it’s something that hasn’t happened yet since I been the Recreation Director, but it means interest in Girls Softball is on the rise.

Summer Day Camp is another program that has kept me busy. As I reported in February Emma Clerihew isn’t returning this summer so I had a Camp Counselor position to fill. I’m happy to report that after a very close and difficult interview/selection process with another Jr. Counselor, Mr. Marc Vitaglino has been hired to fill the open position. Marc has been with camp since it began in 2001, first as a camper for two years, then as a Jr. Counselor for past few summers. He’ll bring a lot of character, a strong work ethic, and a great deal of camp experience with him as he takes this big step forward. Lothrop School is again sending kids to our Day Camp as part of their summer school program. They have reserved a particular number of camp slots each week for kids who might need a little more stimulation over the summer. These Lothrop kids have an academic side of their personal camp experience but all in all they will be a regular part camp and the others campers won’t know the difference.

On Wednesday, April 5, 2006 I attended the Select Board Meeting to take care of annual Recreation Department business. First order of business was to ask them based on the recommendation of the Recreation Committee to set the 2006 Recreation Area Fees the same as they were in 2005, second order of business was to ask them based on the recommendation of the Recreation Committee to appoint Rob Ketcham as Chairman and Kathy Shortsleeves as Vice Chair of the Recreation Committee. The Select Board unanimously approved these requests. Also I brought the Board up to date with the 2006 Pittsford Day program scheduled for Sunday, July 2, 2006 and asked the Town of Pittsford to support the event as it did last year by providing police coverage during the event and appointing the Pittsford Day Committee a Town identity, which they also unanimously approved. I went on to give a brief update of summer programs that the Recreation Department will be offering along with the two (Bath House Roof & Compact Tractor) bids I’ve been working on. And finally before I left I discussed with the Board the ideas the Recreation Committee and I had about expanding the usage of the Recreation Area throughout the winter and the idea of possibly building a “Dual” purpose Ice Skating Rink/Basketball Court.

Believe it or not the Recreation Department is in the process of opening the Recreation Area for the season and Joe Pomykala has already begun getting the area in shape for summer. The first couple of weeks Joe will be concentrating on getting the baseball/softball fields ready to play on, picking up all the debris that has accumulated throughout the winter, and making sure the Tennis Courts are ready for residents and Otter Valley’s Tennis Team to play on. Over the winter the Swim Area Pond received some damage on its north bank. A small portion of the rocks that hold the bank solid has washed into the pond, myself and Shaun Erickson, the Highway Department Foreman together inspected the damage and have a plan for the Highway Crew to fix it as soon as the ground dries out enough so that they won’t rut up the lawn while they’re working.

As I mentioned last month and now has been confirmed the Recreation Department is sponsoring a day trip to Montpelier, VT on Friday, May 12th. Representative Peg Flory will be joining us for the event; she’ll ride the bus to Montpelier, while on the bus she will discuss local and state government. If the Legislature is still in session she’ll talk about what things might happen that day and what look for while on “floor”. If the session is already over she’ll give our group a personal tour of the House Chamber and talk about its inner workings. After lunch (provided as part of the trip) our group will be visiting the VT Historical Society. Both Peg and I are hoping to attract local residents who are not only interested in seeing the State Capitol but who also interested learning more about how state government operates.
